Spaceman Spiff Racing completed another successful mission into the unknown, with the J/111 team placing 2nd and the J/88 team placing 3rd in their respective fleets at the 2017 Quantum Key West Race Week. The J/111 was skippered by the Spaceman himself, Rob Ruhlman, and the J/88 was skippered by Ryan Ruhlman.
There were many highlights from the week, included but not limited to:
On a sad note, on Saturday, January 21 the world lost a great man. A kind heart. A good ear. A goof and a guide.
Russ Kellythorne was a key member of the Spaceman Team for almost a decade, and more importantly a friend to most of us for much longer than that. His presence would fill the room the minute he walked in. You didn’t have to know Russ for a long time to know that he was special, and he didn’t have to know you at all to bring you into whatever was going on. Never one to say no, Russ was always there to help. He crewed on the boat. Drove the support boat. Drove the trucks. Made bags and covers. Set up. Tore down. Whatever the team needed, the team got and that was true for everyone that knew Russ. His kind heart was always willing to lend a hand, or an opinion.
So much more than a crew member, Russ was family.
The hole left by his passing is currently filled with pain, but that pain will be replaced by the memories we all have of the time we spent with such a special person.
Sail On, Russ! Forever a Spaceman!
